Paula Rego

Drawing from her own childhood memories, Paula Rego’s work illustrates corrupted folklore, where fairytale and horror converge to portray feminine experience. Recalling childhood visits to the movies with her father, Rego’s Snow White series appropriates the Disney story with unnerving fictional and autobiographical twists. In Snow White Playing With Her Father’s Trophies, Rego uses the allegory of female vanity to underlie a familial politic. The heroine, pictured in a white dress symbolising virginity and innocence, seems wryly aware of her own sexuality. Sat unladylike with legs spread, she prizes the head of a young buck between her knees, representing sexual awakening and insinuating improper affection towards her father. In the background, her stepmother kneels as aging witch, looking on with scorn and envy.

Formative assessment techniques

In groups for students to further understand the story of fairytales they will be given cue cards to help them develop their own story and how objects and characters can play a bug part in the story.

Scheme of Learning

What I want to achieve from this research assignment

Throughout this scheme of learning I will be developing my Art and Design Pedagogy basing my research on children’s fairytales and how students can collaborate as a group to analyze a fairytale and what it means to them. It will be student led, they will begin by choosing their favorite story form childhood and look at the aspects of the story that they like, how it made them feel and why they liked it. They will be split into six separate groups where students will work together to unpick the story chosen. Once they have analyzed the surface they will begin to unpick the story and see what it is truly saying. Students will be pushed to understand the fairytale further and what impact it has on society and what they want to say. They will decide as a group how they want to present the final idea. Throughout the scheme of learning I will document the process through photographs. For students independent learning they will be given a booklet with pages where they have to create their own story based around the idea of a girl and her journey. Within this scheme of learning there will also be a drawing study where students are given an A5 piece of paper each week with a different process. Available to the students will be inspirational pages and templates to help build their ideas together. Students will present to the class either through a presentation or a gallery display.

Students will learn how to collaborate with their peers, led their own projects and unpicking an idea to investigate what it is really saying. They will recall upon prior knowledge of art and design skills, techniques and apply these throughout the process. By collaborating with their peers students will learn how to analyze and evaluate their work and the work of others. They will learn to experiment and explore through the design process narrowing down the final outcome through group guidance. The project will mainly be student led with advice along the way, each lesson they will focus on something different to help the project progress further.
